The Chen Center for Transformational Impact is the heart of Solutions Academy, our 700-day, college-like program that equips families to permanently escape homelessness.

Located at the Solutions for Change main campus in Vista, The Chen Center provides a dedicated environment where students build the knowledge, skills, discipline, and confidence needed to transform their lives and create a stronger future for their children.

More than a renovated classroom, The Chen Center represents a renewed investment in the people we serve and in the belief that lasting change is possible when families are given the right tools, the right support, and the opportunity to do the hard work of transformation.

The Foundation for Solutions Academy

Solutions Academy is the foundation of the Solutions for Change model. Students participate in an intensive, structured learning experience designed to address the root causes of homelessness and prepare them for long-term independence.

The Chen Center brings this work together in a setting designed specifically for learning, growth, and connection.

Honoring Dr. Richard M.J. Chen

The Chen Center for Transformational Impact was made possible through a $1 million gift from First Singles Church, USA, secured by Solutions for Change board member, Chris Chen, in honor of his father, Dr. Richard M.J. Chen.

Born in Shanghai, China, in 1929, Dr. Chen devoted his life to faith, education, and service. After leaving China, he studied theology at the University of Melbourne and later earned a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, becoming the first person of Chinese heritage admitted to Princeton.

Throughout his life, Dr. Chen focused on serving people whose needs were often overlooked by traditional institutions. In 1972, he founded First Singles Church, USA, a pioneering ministry created to provide community and spiritual support to people who were single, divorced, or widowed at a time when few churches offered such outreach.

Dr. Chen’s life reflected courage, perseverance, and a deep commitment to people facing isolation, hardship, and disadvantage. Those same values live on through the work taking place each day inside The Chen Center.

A Defining Moment

The gift honoring Dr. Chen came at an important moment in the history of Solutions for Change.

For more than 26 years, Solutions for Change has helped families move beyond homelessness by addressing its underlying causes and equipping parents with the tools to rebuild their lives. The Chen Center is one of the first major investments in a broader organizational renaissance now underway across the Solutions for Change campus.

This investment has allowed Solutions Academy to move into a space designed to match the seriousness, dignity, and potential of the students it serves.

The result is not simply a better classroom. It is a stronger platform for transformation.
