CEO of the Year

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Solutions founder and executive director Chris Megison was named CEO of the Year at the June 16 Heroes of Vista event.

The fundraiser, which benefitted the Vista Education Foundation, was organized by the foundation and the Vista Chamber of Commerce. It was the inaugural event of what the sponsors hope will become an annual tradition.

The award was accepted on Chris’ behalf by his brother Patrick, who said, “There are two real heroes: the families working so hard to permanently solve their homelessness, and YOU—the community that is making this possible with your support, encouragement, and personal participation.

“Vista is the community that cares. You are leading the way in meeting and beating one of society’s greatest challenges. On behalf of my brother and all those you’re helping, thank you.”

In choosing to honor Chris, and by extension Tammy Megison, the organizations cited the accomplishments of Solutions for Change in creating and building Solutions University and a program that is succeeding every day at providing families a permanent solution to their homelessness.

Others honored at the community event included:

  • Anne Fennell, arts educator of the year
  • Jorge Hirmas, technology educator of the year
  • Cheryl Depies, scholarships educator of the year
  • Joyce Bales, education leadership award
  • Kelcey Sass, firefighter of the year
  • Andy Julian, officer of the year
  • Master Sgt. Tim Corrigan, combat veteran of the year
  • Logo Expressions Inc., small business of the year
  • Datron World Communications, large business of the year
  • Mother Earth Brewing Co., emerging business of the year
  • Paul Eckert, lifetime achievement award.

“For a community to thrive, it takes us all working together,” said Vista Education Foundation president Brad Peterson, reflecting perfectly the spirit and concept behind Solutions for Change.

Primrose Before Construction

Primrose, Closer to Completion!

A dream will come true in July for 11 families and for Solutions with the opening of the first phase of the Primrose Apartments.

Purchased in 2011 with the assistance of a $3.4 million allocation of federal program funds by the San Diego Board of Supervisors, the project consists of 22 two-bedroom units located in an unincorporated area of Vista. The units have been completely refurbished, literally from top (roof, stairways) to bottom (floors, countertops, fixtures).

“This is a great example of how a public/private partnership can deliver permanent solutions to tough social problems like family homelessness,” said Solutions CEO Chris Megison. “HUD’s funding through the county is an investment which allows us to more effectively rebuild lives alongside our civic, corporate and church partners, all of whom are heavily vested in the Finding Our Way Home plan to solve family homelessness.”

The second half of the project and an on-site park are scheduled for an August opening. The official grand opening ceremony will be August 20th at 11 a.m.

Both phases of the Primrose Apartments are already fully leased to Solutions families who will receive supportive services that enable them to continue on a successful path by combining attention to physical and mental health, job training and security, educational access, and pleasant, secure housing.

You can be part of the solution at the Primrose Apartments by participating in the Solutions House to Home program. Your donation of household items such as dishes, towels, a small dining room set, a vacuum, rugs, TVs and many other items will enable us to transform these 22 units into real homes for our families. Individuals and groups can adopt an apartment, and they can also participate in “decorating days” to help provide those finishing touches that really do make a house into a home. This is a heartwarming way to get personally involved in solving family homelessness and rebuilding lives.

An Evening to Remember, 2012

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Magnificent memories will be made once again on the evening of September 22 as more than 700 people are part of An Evening to Remember…with Rudy Giuliani.

If you were there last year, you know that An Evening to Remember was an awe-inspiring, vibrant and compelling event in which we came together as a community and moved forward on permanently solving homelessness for North County families. Because of the event’s success, there are families housed and working today who were homeless a year ago. What we did on that one night a year ago was exciting and inspiring.

Be there this year, and be part of the solution while having an interesting and fun evening. An Evening to Remember… with Rudy Giuliani will be held at the La Costa Resort and Spa.

This is a rare opportunity to hear in person from a dedicated, dynamic and world-renowned leader. Rudy Giuliani, 107th mayor of New York City (1993-2001), moved more than 640,000 people in New York City from the welfare rolls to the dignity of self-sufficiency and led his city through the tragedy of 9/11.

To date, Solutions for Change has helped more than 600 families get re-equipped, re-housed and re-staked into their own homes. These people are working, healthy and productive. Come be part of this change. Come be part of an evening dedicated to transforming futures for hundreds of children.

Come join Rudy Giuliani and all of us in solving family homelessness.

Act today by going to www.SolutionsForChange.org/Events and purchasing your ticket or table…a ticket to an evening that you will remember forever.

Solutions Farms… Farming Futures!

Monday, June 4th, 2012

A new kind of farm is about to become part of Solutions for Change.

Construction has begun on Solutions Farms, an ambitious and hope-harvesting endeavor that will raise futures as well as food. Solutions Farms is an aquaponics farm (see, A Farm With No Soil?) that produces safe, fresh produce and fish while responding to the rapidly increasing demand for locally-sourced fresh food.

Solutions Farms is located on a two-acre property in Vista, owned by Solutions for Change, with more than 25,000 square feet of existing greenhouse structures.

The site is being rehabilitated and built out in phases. The initial phase will use just over 6,900 square feet of greenhouse and create approximately 3,500 square feet of growing surface. The farms have a projected annual yield of 86,000 pounds of leafy greens and specialty herbs and approximately 13,000 pounds of fish by the final phase. The first harvest will take place later this year.

The fish and produce raised will be sold locally to restaurants and wholesalers, and at local farmers markets and community supported agriculture co-ops (CSA). The revenues will help sustain Solutions for Change programs.

But Solutions Farms’ most important output will be neither its produce nor its fish. This is, first and foremost, a social enterprise venture that combines job training, general education, and entrepreneurship for the benefit of Solutions’ families and the community. Solutions Farms will be an in-house platform that provides Solutions families an opportunity to acquire marketable, higher-wage skills running the gamut from technology to accounting, and marketing to sales. The farm will be an integral part of our commitment to giving people access to the skills, knowledge and resources they need to permanently solve their homelessness.

Many people are homeless because their work skills simply do not command a wage that lets them pay their living expenses. Breaking this cycle of working poverty means acquiring higher value skills, and that will be what Solutions Farms enables us to provide. The farm will be a living laboratory that brings together those needing higher value skills and community professionals who are willing to volunteer their knowledge. Solutions Farms will attract community investment of the time and effort to teach, to the ongoing benefit of our families.

Watch us grow!

A Farm With No Soil?

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Aquaponics is a soil-less method of farming that is gaining attention nationwide because it is water-conserving, provides locally-sourced food that reduces the immense carbon footprint caused by shipping food long distances, and doesn’t cause pollution and other problems often associated with intensive farming.

Aquaponics produces safe, fresh, organic vegetables and fish. This soil-less, closed-loop method of farming involves a symbiotic relationship between fish and plants. The fish, raised in large tanks, provide a food source for the plants through nutrient enrichment of the water, and the plants provide a natural filter for the water, which is recirculated and sustains the fish.

When aquaponics is combined with a controlled-environment greenhouse, premium quality crops can be grown on a year-round basis without the use of pesticides. Unlike hydroponics, the water-based growing of produce and vegetables, the integrated nature of aquaponics avoids the need for chemical fertilizers and supplements and thus enables aquaponics crops to gain organic certification.

Aquaponics is an inherently green technology that is extremely water efficient because virtually all of the water is continuously recirculated. Only losses due to evaporation and transpiration need to be replenished. Unlike conventional farming and hydroponics, there is no nutrient-dense fertilizer runoff to cause pollution of lakes, streams, and underground aquifers. And because crops are raised in a controlled environment, they are nearly pest-free and not subject to the kinds of contamination that have resulted in major recalls of produce.

From a productivity point of view, land utilized in aquaponics is far more productive per square foot than conventional soil farming. This is because conditions are more controlled, permitting many more “turns” per year than is possible with soil-grown crops.
