Summer Camp, Solutions Style

Monday, August 15th, 2011

leadershipcamp1Over ten Solutions youths, ages 12-18 took part in a novel five-day Leadership Development Camp held on the Solutions campus August 1-5.

Under the guidance of Solutions’ interns, Alison King and Lucy Luna, the lucky campers combined a mix of leadership sessions such as “Goal Setting,” “Action Plan,” and “Motivation” and a volunteer effort at the Boys and Girls Club with traditional fun-in-the-sun camper activities (surf lessons, BBQ, movies, rock climbing).

Leadership camp was a community-supported event, notes Lucy Luna. “This year the camp was a success thanks to our local community members, who donated time, food, and gifts. We thank them for everything.”

“I’m proud to say that this was a great experience for all who attended,” said Lucy. “I am seriously looking forward to making this camp happen again next year with another group of teenagers who will benefit from the knowledge, skills, and inspiration it provides.”

Solutions in the Community: Take a ‘Q!

rodrun1Solutions for Change volunteers were out in force-a force of nearly 50-on August 6-7 for the Vista Village Business Association’s annual Smokin’ Q Classic Barbeque Competition and Street Fair followed the next day by the Vista Rod Run.

The BBQ competition occupied minds and mouths all day Saturday. Solutions volunteers assisted with setup and breakdown of vendor booths, trash pickup, and parking coordination. More than 45 teams of BBQ experts competed to demonstrate who had the best pork, beef, and chicken creations.

Sunday was the Vista Rod Run, one of the largest gatherings of classic car aficionados in the San Diego region. This year’s show continued a 20-year tradition, and more than 300 classic cars were on hand, from muscle cars to hot rods.

Both events offered ample opportunity for Solutions volunteers to share with the community what Solutions is about, and how much it means to the community as a whole.
