Strawberries and Fireworks

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

strawberriesfireworksSolutions in the Community on Memorial Day at the Vista Strawberry Festival and 4th of July at the Moonlight Amphitheater: “It’s all about giving back,” said Tammy Megison. “Volunteering is a work of heart.”

Memorial Day found Solutions supporters at the Vista Strawberry Festival. They ran, they walked, they biked, they raced, and they raised more than $1000 for Solutions for Change.

There were 52 Solutions for Change and IAC volunteers at the event, and 51 people in our community registered so we could benefit from their exercise efforts.

The Fourth of July found Solutions families staffing a booth at the Moonlight Amphitheater in Brengle Terrace Park, where they sold glow sticks and shared smiles with the many visitors who flocked for the annual fireworks display.

It was a great opportunity to connect with the community and share in some communal fun.

Solutions for Change – Our Plan

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

fowhFrom the Solutions vision and model there emerged, in April of 2010, a plan. The Finding Our Way Home initiative came into being.

It wasn’t your average plan, because we’re not your average organization and homelessness isn’t your average challenge. It was a bold-some said audacious-plan. It was a plan whose goal was to lead 200 families and their 400 children out of homelessness in three years.

It was a plan that could only work if we met, engaged, and energized the entire community. It would require the support of not just someone, but everyone. Individuals, government, companies of all sizes, foundations, faith communities-everyone had to be on board.

And they are. Today, just shy of the halfway point, we have met the largest and most important goal. We have engaged and energized the community around a vision, model, and plan that means offering families the resources, skills, and knowledge they need to permanently solve their homelessness. And we are on target to help lead 200 families out of homelessness.

You, and many others, are contributing to the solution every day. Thank you.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

TaylorMade Golf, one of the global companies that believes in Solutions for Change, invited 150 Solutions children and their families (as well as Solutions staff) to join the TaylorMade team at the San Diego Padres baseball game on July 15th.

Wide-eyed wonder was in evidence as many children attended their first professional sports event. TaylorMade CEO Mark King threw out the first pitch, accompanied by Solutions resident Olivia B. The Solutions kids were invited onto the field for a once-in-a-lifetime experience including announcement of the starting lineups, and singing of the national anthem.

Though the outcome of the game wasn’t what the Padres might have hoped for, 150 Solutions people knew that they and TaylorMade were winners in a much more important way.

Dear Supporter – A Message from Danny Ashcraft, Chairman of the Board

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

danny-ashcraft1It’s not often, as Board Chair, that I get to address all those who contribute in so many ways to creating solutions at Solutions. But it’s also not often that I get to invite people to join me for an evening with Condoleezza Rice, who was not only Secretary of State (2005-2009) but is a distinguished Stanford professor. She will be the speaker and guest of honor on October 8th at An Evening to Remember… with Condoleezza Rice, the annual Solutions for Change benefit event.

And this will be an evening to remember. In addition to hearing Dr. Rice, you will enjoy a superb meal, have an opportunity to bid on some very unique items at a live auction, and be entertained by the very talented singer- songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk.

Most important, by being there you will change lives and break the grip of homelessness that keeps children from fully achieving their potential. You and I are part of a community that cares. It’s a community comprised of companies, foundations, faith communities, and many individuals like us. You can make a difference. By joining us on October 8th, you will solve family homelessness in North County.

I look forward to seeing you.

Congratulations QLN Supercamp Graduates!

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Congratulations to our 3 graduates of QLN’s Supercamp—Thank You QLN for Inspiring Brilliance in our Children!

Solutions for Change is fortunate to have tremendous community support, and one of our partners—Quantum Learning Center—made a special contribution recently by providing scholarships for three Solutions youngsters to attend Supercamp at Loyola Marymount University July 13-19.

Solutions is about providing families the resources, skills and knowledge they need to succeed and Supercamp supported that effort by teaching our middle-school-age kids about the eight keys to excellence.

After a week of Supercamp, these young people are now far better prepared to excel as they enter eighth grade in the fall. Thank you, Quantum Learning.
